Meet Susan
Susan Carol Elgin joined Wasserman White Family Law as Of Counsel after 28 years of practicing at the preeminent Towson family law firm, Kaufman, Ries & Elgin.
Susan is an accomplished member of the family law community. She is a Past President of the Maryland Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, to which Tom and Laurie are also Fellows. She succeeded Tom Ries as a member of the National Board of Governors of the AAML. Susan co-authored the AAML’s Maryland Chapter’s amicus brief to the Court of Appeals of Maryland regarding the constitutionality of Maryland’s statute which prohibited same-sex marriage.
A champion for women’s causes, Susan has served as a Board Member of the Women’s Law Center of Maryland since 1991, was President from 1997-1999, and was awarded the prestigious Rosalyn B. Bell Award in 2018 for her achievements and contributions to family law.
She was a recipient of The Maryland Daily Record Leadership in Law Award, and has been included in Maryland’s Top 100 Women and the Circle of Excellence by Warfield’s Business Record. Susan received the 2005 Machen Award from the Maryland Legal Services Corporation for extraordinary service by a member of the private bar to the delivery of legal services to the poor and reform of the legal system. She was a member of the Maryland Commission for Women from 2008-2014, serving as Chair from 2010-2012.
Currently, Susan mentors lawyers at Maryland Legal Aid and for the CLAS project at the Women’s Law Center. Susan has also been included in Best Lawyers in America (copyright by Woodward/White, Inc.) for “Family Law”. Susan has been selected to Maryland Super Lawyers as a top Maryland Family Law Attorney every year since 2007, including Top 25 and Top 50 Women Super Lawyers recognition.
Susan resides in Baltimore and loves spending time with family, including her two beautiful grandchildren. She enjoys Bikram yoga and traveling around the world (she’s been to Australia 12 times)!
