Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between contested and uncontested divorce?
An uncontested divorce occurs when both spouses agree on all aspects of the divorce and submit a Marital Settlement Agreement to the Court. A contested divorce arises when spouses disagree on one or more issues, such as property division, alimony, or child custody. Working with a Maryland divorce attorney ensures your rights are protected in either scenario.
How long does it take to get a divorce in Maryland?
The timeline for a Maryland divorce depends on a variety of factors such as custody, alimony, distribution of property, and most importantly, the relationship between you and your spouse. At a minimum, you must be separated for at least six months before filing for divorce. A divorce that proceeds to litigation can take up to two years or longer. A Maryland divorce attorney can help you streamline the process and protect your interests.
Do I need a lawyer to get a divorce?
While it is possible to file for divorce without an attorney, having a skilled divorce attorney is highly recommended. Even if you have an amicable divorce, you’ll want an attorney to ensure that your Marital Settlement Agreement is properly drafted and legally enforceable in order to prevent future disputes.
What are the legal grounds for divorce in Maryland?
In 2025, Maryland reformed the laws around grounds for separation. There are three no-fault grounds recognized: irreconcilable differences, mutual consent and six-month separation (reduced from twelve-month separation). Maryland no longer recognizes fault-based grounds. A knowledgeable Maryland divorce attorney can help determine the best approach specific to your situation.
How much does a divorce cost in Maryland?
There are a variety of factors that can impact the cost of your divorce. At Wasserman White Family Law, we work to keep clients informed about anticipated legal fees and have options available to help you make decisions that best fit your financial situation.
Can I file for divorce if my spouse does not agree?
Yes. In Maryland it only takes one party to file for divorce and a divorce can proceed even if the other spouse does not agree. You can read more here.

Five Stars for Martha
Before I hired Martha, I was working with another attorney for my divorce process, and I just didn’t feel like they were on my side and looking out for my best interests. Someone referred me to Martha White, and once I met with her, I made the decision to end my retainer agreement with my current attorney and hire Martha White. Martha White listened to me and to my concerns and what I wanted out of dissolving my marriage. She was always responsive to my calls or emails and took the time to explain things to me, so that I understood all of the terms and possible outcomes of this process. I feel that she helped me reach a fair settlement and I was happy with the final settlement agreement. I wish I would have hired her in the first place. She didn’t drag the process out any longer than it needed to be. I was very pleased with her representation of me in my divorce case. If I ever would have another family law issue, she would be the first attorney I would contact. You can’t go wrong having Martha White as your attorney.

Third Time’s a Charm with Virginia
I had a great experience with Virginia. I first contacted her in regard to a divorce when I was at my wits-end. I had attempted to divorce my abusive (NOW!) ex-husband twice before on my own and both times I failed. It was just too much while I was juggling caring for my four kids. Hiring Virginia was truly the best thing I could have ever done.
The conversations were open, and I felt heard when I shared my situation and what I hoped the outcome to be. What I appreciated most was that she’d give me advice but made it clear the choice was ultimately my decision—I wasn’t just along for the ride. She explained the processes and kept me informed throughout the entire process and we ended up with the justice and judgment I deserved. Thank you, Virginia!

Absolutely Amazing is an Understatement
I was referred to Laurie Wasserman and hired her to represent me in my extremely difficult divorce and custody case. From day one, I was confident I had made the right choice. She and her team worked with me and advocated for me harder than I could have ever imagined. She has a vast knowledge of the law and she not only advised, but supported me throughout the most strenuous year and a half of my entire life. She is organized, professional, kind, understanding, and savvy. When we finally went to trial, I had the utmost confidence in Laurie, her team, and my case. She also made sure I was completely prepared for all possible scenarios. I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome, and I will be forever grateful for her hard work and dedication. I can honestly say that hiring Laurie to represent me was one of the best decisions I have ever made, and the outcome we were able to reach is the absolute best I could dream of for my family.
