Alimony

Support during and after divorce.

In Maryland, alimony is established and modified on a case-by-case basis, considering each couple’s unique circumstances.

Types of Alimony

Pendente Lite alimony, also known as “temporary alimony,” is support paid while a divorce case is pending. It is an allowance based on one party’s need and the other’s ability to pay.

Rehabilitative alimony is for a specific period post-divorce. The court must consider many statutory factors to determine the amount and duration of this award.

Indefinite alimony is for someone who cannot work due to age or disability. It is also for someone who would otherwise experience an “unconscionably disparate” lifestyle from their former spouse.

Unlike child support, Maryland does not require an alimony calculator. This means that the amount and duration of an alimony award will depend on the Judge presiding over the case and the evidence each side presents.
